JOB DESCRIPTIONS:
Firefighter:
Firefighters work under the direction of a Company Officer. Duties include: firefighting, rescue, forcible entry, ventilation, first aid, CPR, HAZMAT, cleaning/service of tools and equipment, and working in Fire Alarm as a relief FCO, as needed. After one year of service, firefighters are required to be able to work in the position of Engineer and drive the fire unit along with operate the pump and equipment on the unit.
Fire Communications Officer:
FCO's work out of Fire Alarm communication's center located in the Parish Government Complex. Duties include: answering emergency 911 phone calls, dispatching appropriate fire units, handling all phone and radio traffic to assist with emergencies, and maintaining vital records of communication. Computer, typing, and clear communication skills are important. FCO's hold the rank of Captain.
Fire Prevention Inspector:
FPI's work out of Headquarters. Duties include: enforcement of fire codes, issuing permits, reviewing construction plans, maintaining fire reports, investigating the origin and cause of fires, testifying in court on such matters, and working with law enforcement. FPI's hold the rank of Captain.
WORK SCHEDULES:
Firefighters are in the Suppression Division. The work schedule for the Suppression Division is 24 hours on duty, 48 hours off duty. Report time is 7:00 AM and relieve time is 7:00 AM the following morning.
Fire Communication Officers are in the Communication Division. The work schedule for the Communication Division is 12-hour shifts with a day shift and a night shift. Report time is 6:00 AM for the day shift, and 6:00 PM for the night shift.
Fire Prevention Inspectors are in the Fire Prevention Division. The work schedule for the Fire Prevention Division is a Flex schedule: Monday through Friday on a bi-weekly rotation totaling 80 hours per pay period.

Civil Service:
Impartial hearing and review on all personnel actions.
Collective Bargaining Agreement:
Union contract with certain rights between St. Bernard Parish Firefighters Association and St. Bernard Parish Government.
Salary:
Starting wage for a Firefighter: $11.88 per hour avg. 56 HRS / week
Starting wage for a Fire Communication Officer:$20.35 per hour avg. 42 HRS / week
Starting wage for a Fire Prevention Inspector: $Determined by the Fire Chief per hour. 40 HRS / week
Paid Annual Leave:
Earn 18 hours per month, 1st through the 10th year
Earn 1 hour more for each additional year thereafter
Paid Sick Leave:
Earn 12 hours per month
2% Annual Salary Increase:
As required by state law.
Supplemental Pay:
$600.00 per month from the State after one year of service
Health Insurance:
Single or Family
The parish pays 70% of the premium.
Employee pays 30% of the premium
Retirement:
Vested after 12 years of service
3.3% of pay, per year of service (ex 20 years = 66%, 25 years = 83%, 30 years = 99%)
Eligibility: 20 years and age 50, 25 years of any age, or 12 years and age 55
Also, it has Survivor Benefits and a DROP
Paid Holidays:
15 designated holidays per year
Holiday pay is 3 times regular pay
You only get paid for holidays that actually worked.
Personal Day:
One personal day off per year
